What is the difference between shared hosting and VPS hosting?

shared hosting vps hosting

When you launch a website, one of the things you need is a good hosting package. Hosting basically means renting a certain amount of storage, processing power, and memory on a hosting provider’s server. The hosting provider mostly takes care of the technical side of your website; it provides a server that allows your website to be accessible via the Internet, protects that server, and configures it in such a way as to make sure that your website stays online even when there is a lot of traffic. There are several options to choose from when selecting a hosting package. The most important ones are shared hosting and VPS hosting. What do these terms mean exactly, and what is the difference between the two types of hosting? This article will explain it all.

What is shared hosting?

As the name would suggest, shared hosting involves sharing. In short, your website is hosted on a server that also hosts other people’s websites. Thus, a server’s full capacity is spread across several accounts. With shared hosting, the websites all make use of the same server capacity, the same operating system (such as Linux), the same web server (such as Apache or Nginx), the same database server (often MySQL), and similar scripting languages such as PHP. The amount of storage you get on the server depends on the hosting package that you as the website owner choose to go with.

Shared hosting with Savvii: what are the options?

Savvii offers three shared hosting packages. Our starter pack costs 11 euros a month (excluding VAT), and offers 250 MB of available disk space and unlimited data traffic. This package is suitable for a maximum of one website. Our Shared One package (29 euros a month) offers more options in terms of page views and disk space (10 GB), and is also suitable for a maximum of one website. If you want Savvii to host multiple websites for you, opt for the Shared Five package. This package offers 25 GB of disk space, unlimited data traffic, and the option of having up to 5 different websites hosted by us.

What is VPS hosting?

VPS is short for Virtual Private Server. As the name would suggest, there is a difference between VPS hosting and shared hosting. The system can run several virtual machines (the VPSes) on one physical server. As such, VPS hosting allows you to benefit from all of the advantages and features of a server, but in a virtual format. Such virtual machines have been in use with computer giants like IBM and HP for a while now, but is increasingly gaining popularity amongst Internet hosting providers.

VPS hosting with Savvii

Savvii is the one to turn to for high-quality VPS hosting packages as well. We offer the following options:

  • VPS One: 450k page views p/m, 20 GB disk space, unlimited data traffic, and one website
  • VPS Ten: 750k page views p/m, 65 GB disk space, unlimited data traffic, and a maximum of ten websites
  • VPS Twenty: 1750k page views p/m, 160 GB disk space, unlimited data traffic, and a maximum of no less than twenty sites

Important differences and advantages of VPS hosting

The most important difference between shared hosting and VPS hosting is the way in which both systems utilise the available hardware resources. In the case of shared hosting, the websites and/or applications on the server make use of the resources and available server capacity at the same time. It follows that the various users on the server can experience some inconvenience if one of the websites or applications on their shared server is very demanding. Your website could slow down considerably or even end up offline for a while. This leads us to the main advantage of VPS hosting. Because VPS hosting gives you your own section of server capacity that other users do not have access to, you are never inconvenienced by other websites or applications. As such, your website’s performance will be a lot better and more reliable with VPS hosting. And because VPSes function completely independently, they also offer significant security advantages.

When should I choose shared hosting, and when should I choose VPS?

Your requirements largely determine what would be the right hosting package for you. If you are hardly a technical whizz and have little knowledge of server management, a shared package may well be all you need, particularly if you do not need huge resources. The advantages of our shared hosting packages are their relatively low price tags and the fact that all maintenance is performed by the hosting provider. Moreover, they allow you to get started almost right away. However, shared hosting has certain limitations in terms of data traffic, disk space, and performance. If you depend on your website for your business and require more freedom and flexibility, VPS hosting is usually the way to go. Savvii’s VPS hosting manages your VPSes as well, which is why this type of VPS hosting is known as ‘managed hosting’. This is not always the case with VPS hosting.
